We are Whakaahuru – The Gentle Singers. We comfort people near the end of life with gentle, soothing songs. We sing by request, at people’s bedsides, at home or in care facilities from Wellington through to Porirua and Hutt Valley. Please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. Our singing offers comfort and relaxation, a connection with community and a feeling of support that extends to family and caregivers. We’re trained to be sensitive to the needs of those present, and to respond accordingly.

We deliver our service without charge. Our singers are all volunteers and we fund our expenses through donations, grants and fundraising events. The Whakaahuru Singers are grateful to Wellington Community Trust, MusicHelps  and Creative NZ for their generous support.

Our Choir Leader works closely with our Musical Advisor (who is on our management committee).

In 2020 we produced videos of our songs to be played to people we cannot reach: we call this our Video Tapestry project. Here is one of our favourites, May the Soft Light. All the video tapestries can be viewed on the Our videos page.
